The folks at Evernote have a new application for iPad 2 owners that takes advantage of the Apple-crafted Smart Cover to help students prepare for a quiz, learn a foreign language, or improve their memory.

Recognized for their useful note-taking application called Evernote (just like the company), the developers saw a great opportunity in coding another useful piece of software with the arrival of the Apple iPad 2.

To protect the screen of the post-PC device, customers can also buy a 30 dollar protective cover ingeniously designed by Apple not only to protect the tablet, but also communicate with it.

As the Apple promotional videos show, the Smart Cover wakes the iPad from sleep when the user pulls off as little as one of the panels that make it up.

This functionality is leveraged by the new Evernote Peek app which lets you simply “peek under the cover to prepare for a quiz, practice a language or strengthen your memory.”

According to its developers, Evernote Peek is the first app designed for the iPad 2 Smart Cover.

“Studying with an iPad has never been more natural,” says Evernote.

The instructions say: choose a notebook to study -> close the Smart Cover -> peek under the cover to see a clue -> lift the cover more to see the answer -> Repeat.

Students can add their own study materials to Peek by just connecting to Evernote - also a free app for iOS and pretty much every platform out there, mobile and desktop.

Once inside your Evernote account, you can either choose an existing notebook or make a new one to use with Peek.

“The note title will become the clue and the note body will become the answer,” according to Evernote developers.

Students are advised to keep the clue to one sentence and the answer to around three sentences for best results.

Needless to point out, Evernote Peek only works with the iPad 2. The app also calls for iOS 4.3 or later.
