Even before James Cameron came out the most successful 3D film in history (so far), “Avatar,” there'd been a lot of talk about whether the 3D frenzy was something that would last. A new infographic from Sortable will answer whatever questions you might have on the topic.

Michael Bay, for instance, was convinced that 3D wasn't worth paying attention to because it would fizzle out in months, so he vouched he'd never shoot a film in 3D.

Then, he made “Transformers: The Dark of the Moon.” His resolve went out the window.

The bottom line is that, over the past couple of years, there have been more 3D releases (be they shot in 3D or converted in post-production) than regular ones, which would justify thinking that cinema is moving away from traditional cinematography.

While movies in 3D are more expensive, they're also more profitable because of the premium price ticket.

The infographic attached to this blog post (click on the image above to enlarge) offers a proper and very clear look at how things stand in today's movie industry with 3D.

The conclusion is that 3D may seem very strong today, but history has shown us that it's a trend that comes and goes with almost clock-like regularity.

So, to answer the burning question of whether the 3D bubble will burst: yes, it will. And soon.
