If you ever felt like you’ve seen the movie you’re watching before, here’s why

We often complain (a lot) about the lack of originality in Hollywood, but chances are you might not even realize how similar today’s movies are. That’s because they’re all made based on a certain proven “recipe,” depending on genre.

This is what the infographic attached to this blog post aims to illustrate: that most movies play out the same, albeit with different characters and a slightly different story. There are certain key things that are always present, if you just know where to look.

Of course, this infographic takes the light, funny approach to the situation (you don’t really get the ukulele version of a Cure song at the end of each rom-com), but the bottom line is the same: Hollywood is using the same pattern for most movies because it’s already been confirmed as successful.

With some productions, this pattern might be harder to distinguish because it’s all “dressed up” in a better story or solid acting performances, but it’s still there. With the majority of releases there, it’s so painfully obvious that you even get the impression you’ve seen the movie before, even though you haven’t.

From experience, I’d say that the pattern is obvious especially in B horror movies. It’s only in recent years that the genre has seen a revival, with franchises like “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity” putting a new twist on the classic horror movie “recipe.”

Action flicks, which are a dime a dozen these days, come second.
