The idea has been floating around for some time now, but it's starting to become more and more probable that a Call of Duty MMO will eventually surface. The concept first emerged some time ago, when Activision first acquired
Blizzard, as combining the two most popular games of the company would be the most obvious business project. And while a Warcraft FPS would be a rather obvious disaster, the idea of CoD seems to be far more appealing.
The rumor received more ammunition today, as we found out that Infinity Ward would be shying away from Modern Warfare 3. The studio plans to do something completely new, and Destructoid may have found out what. Apparently, IW has started hiring people from Sony Computer Entertainment, and it looks like it has already managed to get a hold of EverQuest II's lead designer. Another developer to have just recently joined Infinity's ranks is a former Blizzard employee, who apparently had to deal with
World of Warcraft's developing process.
According to Destructoid's “industry sources,” at least for now, the Call of Duty franchise will be supported by Treyarch and continue with its annual franchise policy, while Infinity Ward will continue to work on its mysterious project. While it may be a bit of a stretch indeed, the only viable possibility that comes to mind, considering all the facts and rumors bundled together here, is that Infinity is working on a Call of Duty massively multiplayer online game, and most likely it will be
Modern Warfare-themed.
And by the look of things, unless one of the employees that are actually working on this project gets drunk in a bar and starts bragging about how we'll get to grind terrorists for epic loot, chances that further details will emerge anytime soon are very slim. MMOs, regardless of their genre, are, as their name implies, massive projects that take a long time to develop, so there can be no instant jumps in the development project. But if this would turn out to be something in the likes of Hellgate and not MAG, then the
CoD MMO might actually succeed.
