The game does merit a second playthrough, according to the developer

Infamous: Second Son developer Sucker Punch Productions has talked a bit about the choices it made during the game's creation process and how it decided to focus on a 10-12 hour story campaign instead of a multiplayer mode and a shorter single-player.

Infamous: Second Son will be the franchise's first iteration on the PS4 console, as Sucker Punch already got a cult following on the PS3 with Infamous 1 and 2, as well as the standalone expansion, Festival of Blood.

For Second Son, the studio is changing the protagonist, the setting, and the set of superpowers that can be used by players, replacing electricity or ice with smoke and neon.

According to Sucker Punch's co-counder, Chris Zimmerman, the game will have a pretty respectable main story that lasts around 10 to 12 hours, but he emphasized to Destructoid on Twitch that this doesn't include secondary missions or collectible items.

What's more, don't forget that an Infamous title begs to be replayed at least once more, as the story drastically alters depending on what moral choices you make. Playing an evil character will also take a bit less time, apparently, as Zimmerman said that players can just go in, unleash their powers to destroy everything, and get out. Meanwhile, good players will need to make sure they're not causing collateral damage or hurting civilians.

A multiplayer mode was considered for the game at first but the executive also told IGN that it ultimately decided to make a full single-player game that properly shows off the power of the PS4, instead of making sacrifices to complete a multiplayer mode.

"We didn’t have a lot of resources so we had to figure what to focus on, and we focused on really leveraging the hardware. Making sure that we were doing a PS4 game to make you glad that you joined team sony, to make you glad that you have a PS4. So we worked hard on just making the game look and feel spectacular. We didn’t feel like we could do justice to a multiplayer setup at the same time," he said.

While Sucker Punch is keeping a tight lid on what other powers protagonist Delsin Rowe can use in the game besides smoke and neon, Zimmerman did say that one set of abilities that didn't make it into the final game was steel. The studio had a lot of ideas but most of them felt like "been there done that" so the idea was scrapped.

Infamous: Second Son launches on March 21 worldwide for the PS4.
