Indonesia Bans 'Playboy'

The Jakarta police launched an investigation that is to prove that the two latest issues of the world's most famous men's magazine, 'Playboy', has violated the decency laws. The April and May issues (that were actually the first ever and, apparently, will also be the last ones), although exposing very little flesh, were declared on Friday to be 'indecent' and sparkled strong protests from the Muslim population.

The editor of said magazine and the two models that appeared in it are currently investigated and have already been declared 'suspects' (the first step, according to Indonesian law, prior to charges being filed) and many more are to be held responsible for the indecency crime.

The April issue was badly received but, in spite of all warnings, Erwin Arnada (the editor-in-chief), chose to relocate the magazine's headquarters from Jakarta to Bali and continue working on the second number.

Most of the latter's pages were filled with blank white spaces, where the ads should have been, and the following note addressed to the firms and companies that were threatened by local authorities to stop advertising in 'Playboy': 'These blank pages are dedicated to our loyal clients who have been threatened against placing ads in this magazine'.

The police have, for the moment, banned 'Playboy' and confiscated most of its copies. They say it's for the sake of the investigation, but nobody seems to buy that. All views coincide: taking into consideration the fact that there was too little nudity to object to, it's the very idea that stands behind such magazines what bothers them the most.
