India has proved to be quite absorbent when it comes to tablet adoption, but are customers in so deep? A new study published by CyberMedia Research, entitled India Tablets Consumer Usage and Adoption Trends 2013, shows a slightly different story.

According to the new CMR report, 78% of the respondents feel that tablets still have some way to go before completely replacing the old-school PC. Even so, there are still a lot of tablet fans in the country.

87% of tableters claimed they prefer Android slates, with only 10% picking the Apple iPad as their favorite.

The study included 3,600 participants (from which 1,200 where non-users) living across several regions in India and inquired about tablet preference and use.

Indian slate fans seem to like Samsung products a lot, as the brand has been hailed by users and non-user alike. 3 out of 4 users admitted to purchasing slates due to their portable capabilities, which allows them to stream video, access social media or play a game anywhere.

Almost half of the respondents (40%) said that they use the slate for chatting, sending out messages or composing emails, highlighting that tablets are mostly used to communicate and stay in touch. Indians also seem to be favoring all tablet sizes.

“Consumers are driving segmentation of the market away from one-size-fits-all models toward different devices available at distinct price points. Interestingly, satisfaction seems to peak for tablets in Rs 5,000 ($81 / €60) to Rs 10,000 ($164 / €120) price range as well as Rs 20,000 ($328 / €239) and above price bracket,” said CMR.

18% of those involved in the study said they were constantly purchasing tablet apps, which means the slate community in the country is developing at a fast rate.

Last but not least, 51% of tablet users said that they were using the device at least 2 hours a day, a time span expected to increase, as more and more customers jump in the slate bandwagon.
