Since Windows XP support is coming to an end very soon, users, companies, and organizations across the world are now looking for alternative platforms which are not only easy to use, but also reliable and come with support for older hardware.

The Indian state of Tamil Nadu has decided to move from the old Windows XP to Linux, thus avoiding the necessary hardware upgrades for Windows 8.1 and keeping data secure with ease.

ITWire is reporting that the local government departments are being upgraded to Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS), a locally-developed version of Linux specifically developed for computers used by the local authorities.

News that some users are moving from Windows to Linux are not at all surprising, but there’s no doubt that Microsoft is afraid that the majority of XP users might actually abandon Windows completely and switch to a different platform before it manages to tweak its flagship operating system in order to better address their needs.

Word is that Microsoft is already working to lower system requirements for the modern Windows, with people close to the matter hinting that 1GB of RAM and 16 GB of space could be needed to install the new Windows 8.1 Update expected to launch today.
