A number of internauts from India have reported receiving emails that purport to come from the country’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The agency has issued an alert notifying users that they would never send such messages.

Apparently coming from addresses such as [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected], the false emails tell recipients that the CBI is monitoring their financial transactions.

“The Sender(s) falsely claim that Central Bureau of Investigation is monitoring financial transactions of individuals and authenticating/proposing to take action on such transactions,” the advisory notes.

The messages have been found to contain, or point to, malicious and “misleading” content.

Users who come across such phony emails are advised not to respond and report them to the CBI’s New Delhi offices at: [email protected].
