On Friday, June 28, India announced that it had decided to outlaw the practice of testing cosmetics on animals. The country is the first in South Asia to implement such measures.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) was quick to take credit for India's historic move.

The organization maintains that, but for its aggressive campaigns, companies manufacturing and marketing cosmetics in this country would have continued to abuse animals for many years to come.

PETA's anti-animal cruelty campaigns got loads of support from several high officials in India.

Interestingly enough, companies like The Body Shop and LUSH also asked that the Indian Ministry of Health & Family Welfare issue this ban.

“Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard on this campaign, from celebrities, politicians and compassionate businesses who lent their support to the many PETA India supporters who raised their voices and donated time and money to make this achievement possible.

“Celebrations are in order all around!” PETA India writes in a blogpost.
