The other day, the official artwork for “Cocoa Butter,” India Arie’s latest single, emerged online, causing a lot of commotion because her skin appeared lighter than her fans knew it should be. Some even said that she might be bleaching her skin in real life but most assumed the intention was only to “appear” whiter in the pic.

Responding to the controversy on her Twitter, the singer says the photo is the result of a combination of lighting and angle and, I assume, retouching.

“Personally speaking! i'm happy to say I have NOT BLEACHED my skin LOL! ROTF at the thought,” she tweets.

“1. I wouldn't endanger my health that way 2. i'm so in love with myself I have no DESIRE to BLEACH myself. 3. The GLOW you see IS (magnificent) lighting 4. THE LIGHT you see, Well thats all ME!!” the singer adds.

So there you have it: India Arie is not bleaching her skin and she’s not out to make her new fans think she’s whiter than she is in real life.

Did you expect anything less from the woman who sings the beautiful “Brown Skin”?
