Fox has been looking to release a sequel to its box office hit “Independence Day” for quite some time now. The 1996 alien-busting, world-saving flick went on to become a blockbuster, which is more than enough reason to eye it for a sequel.

Director Roland Emmerich is currently working with co-writer and producer Dean Devlin to make “Independence Day 2” a reality that is going to air on July 4, 2016. However, Deadline reports that their plans don't include the star of the first film, Will Smith.

It's been rumored that the studio has been expecting such a movie from the star actor and has been secretly working on two versions of the script. One had Smith as a centerpiece, and the other focused more on battling the aliens without the aid of the cocky Air Force pilot.

However, discussions on the matter haven't reached their final point, and it's very possible that Smith will be coaxed to reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller, one that took him on a path to super stardom and made him one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood.

As Captain Hiller so eloquently put it in the film, “It ain't over until the fat lady sings.”
