This sequel has been in the works for almost 20 years, but now fans that cheered on for the human race in movie theaters in 1996 to get their planet back from aliens will have the chance to do so again, as “Independence Day 2” has just been greenlit and announced to be released on the very significant date July 4, 2016.

Deadline claims that Fox has approved the project and is now in advanced talks to have Roland Emerich, the original director for the first movie, come in to do the sequel. There is also talking that the producers are now reaching out to the original cast of the film, trying to see who is willing to return for the sequel.

We already know, thanks to some reports earlier this year, that actors Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum will be making a return, but it's still not official at this point. The big news is that Will Smith won't be making a return as the wise-cracking Captain Steve Hiller who saved the planet because the actor refuses to join the sequel.

Though rumors spoke of two sequels actually being in the works at the same time in order to save money, it looks like only one will be getting made after all. Still, fans are looking forward to see what the aliens have cooked up for us this time.
