The crane was supposed to lower the man into his girlfriend's garden, tipped over and smashed into a building instead

This past weekend, an incurable romantic in the Netherlands tried to propose to his better half by having a crane lower him into the lucky lady's garden. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned and the man ended up destroying a building's roof.

On the bright side, nobody was injured. In fact, the man was not even arrested. On the contrary, word has it that, after he finally got around to proposing and his girlfriend agreed to marry him, he got to take his sweetheart on a trip to Paris.

Cranes are unpredictable machineries

It is understood that this fairly amusing incident played out in the town of IJsselstein in the province of Utrecht. The man, whose identity has not yet been made public, hired the crane hoping to use it to lower himself into this girlfriend's garden and take her by surprise.

While lowering the man, the crane somehow lost its balance and tipped over. The would-be Romeo managed to jump and made a more or less smooth landing on the ground just before the machinery crashed into a building's roof.

It goes without saying that the man operating the crane, the hopeless romantic, and the people living in the house that the machinery landed on were all quite taken aback by this turn of events. Truth be told, it's safe to assume that they were all downright shocked.

A repeat performance

By the looks of it, the crane that this man tried to use to propose to his girlfriend did not smash through the building's roof just once. As detailed by Jezebel, it crashed into the same terribly unlucky house twice. The good news is that the second incident wasn't the husband's-to-be fault.

Thus, it was workers who tipped the crane over a second time around while trying to get it back on the ground and in an upright position. This other crash was caught on camera, and the video is available below.

Presently, specialists are trying to figure out whether the house that got hit in this unfortunate chain of events should be put out of its misery and demolished.

The man wasn't even arrested

As surprising as this may sound, it appears the man responsible for this entire conundrum wasn't even arrested. Authorities labeled the affair an unfortunate accident, and shortly after his sweetheart accepted his marriage proposal, the man got to go on a trip to Paris.

Then again, chances are that, if the house is proven to no longer be safe and is consequently demolished to make room for a new, crane-proof one, the owners will expect some compensation.
