Increased funding for the video game-oriented division at Microsoft for the quarter running from July through September suggests that the company is moving more resources than ever to the development effort for the yet-unannounced Xbox 720 home console.

Gamasutra cites financial data from Microsoft, showing that Research & Development expenditure at the division which handles entertainment products have gone up by 44 percent starting with July, reaching more than 310 million dollars (237 million Euro).

Apparently, some of the money was linked to the acquisition of Skype, but most was linked to the Xbox sector.

The financial results also show that during that quarter Microsoft shipped more than 2.3 million home consoles, which did not translate directly into actual sales.

Revenue derived from sales of video games was down, mostly because the publisher did not have another high-profile title to replicate the performance of Gears of War 3 during 2011.
