Our Incoming 2015 series focuses on the most important game launches of the next 12 months, and next up we talk about Star Wars Battlefront.

What we know

Up until recently there was almost no information about Star Wars Battlefront, the shooter in development at DICE. This week however, publisher EA and developer DICE have decided to reveal a piece of the concept art, along with some tiny bit of info on the next game in the Star Wars franchise.

First of all, this is just one of the many Star Wars games that are now in development at Electronic Arts. Star Wars Battlefront is made by DICE, while Bioware and Visceral may work on untitled Star Wars games as well, though we know nothing about either for the moment.

DICE game is built with the Frostbite 3 engine, and apart from that, we only know that some of the action will take place on the planet Hoth and the moon Endor, which will be included in the game as playable maps.

As many of you probably know, there’s already a game with the same name, but DICE did not want to rebrand the new game as a sequel to Star Wars Battlefront II because they claim that it’s a reboot rather than a sequel. They also say that it’s their own vision on the original Battlefront game.

The latest statement coming from DICE’s Niklas Fergraeus, Star Wars Battlefront design director, suggests that the studio has decided to specifically tailor certain maps to certain modes.

He has also confirmed they are working to bring the environments to life using an internally developed technology called “photogrammetry.” We expect more details on Star Wars Battlefront this spring, as confirmed by DICE’s official.

Why it matters

Star Wars is one of world’s most popular franchises, and the next game in the series comes after many years of waiting, so it makes sense that the expectations are pretty high. If DICE botches Battlefront’s launch, the rest of Star Wars games in development at other studios might be canceled or people will lose faith in the franchise.

We will certainly know how the chances are for DICE’s Star Wars Battlefront not to be smash-hit in the coming months, when developers promised more info.
