The long-awaited zombie game debuts this month

Our Incoming 2015 series focuses on the most important game launches of the next 12 months, and next up we talk about one of the most anticipated titles in the month of January – Dying Light – made by Techland and set to be published by Warner Bros.

What we know

Dying Light is a brand new zombie game coming from Techland, the studio that has already delivered not one but two different Dead Island titles. However, while those experiences were venturing more into the role-playing genre, the upcoming one is heading into the action-adventure one.

Dying Light sees players try to survive in a zombie-infested Turkish city by scavenging, finding weapons, saving others, interacting with the different survivor factions, and performing other quests. Besides traditional zombie game mechanics, players will be able to employ freerunning maneuvers while exploring the environment, making traversing the whole undead-infested city much easier.

However, while during the day the zombies aren't that threatening, especially in lower numbers, at night they become much more powerful and much more aggressive. As such, it's vital that you set up traps and plan your routes through the city in order to avoid their attacks.

Besides the story campaign, there's a built-in four-player cooperative mode, and only for those who pre-order the game there will be an exclusive competitive aspect through which they can infiltrate the games of others and control a powerful zombie called the Night Hunter.

Why it matters

Techland has delivered some pretty decent titles in recent years, and the Polish studio certainly has a lot of potential to delight with Dying Light. The game seems solid, promises to introduce a few new things to the already stale zombie game recipe, and looks really good.

While the decision to have the Night Hunter competitive mechanic be available only to those who pre-order is a bit controversial, the cooperative mode still promises to be quite entertaining for those who get it after its release.

The planned add-ons also look quite intriguing, especially one that organizes a sort of arena experience inside an abandoned stadium.

Dying Light launches for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on January 27, in North America, and January 30, in Europe and the rest of the world.
