What we know:

Watch Dogs was set to be one of the few all-new intellectual properties to appear in the holiday season of 2013 but, unfortunately for fans who awaited the new title, Ubisoft opted to delay the game and ensure that it brings a polished and high-quality experience.

The new title stars a regular protagonist called Aiden Pearce who, in an alternate-reality Chicago, uses his hacker skills and his hand-to-hand combat abilities to take down criminals in his own quest for vengeance.

His version of Chicago is controlled by a city-wide system called CtOS (Central Operating System) that governs everything from fuse boxes to traffic lights and much more.

Using his trusty smartphone and his quick thinking, Pearce can hack into the OS and use the different tools to take out foes, distract others, or mess with regular citizens.

Besides his hacking skills, Aiden can also engage in fights and drive cars around the big city, slowly uncovering its secrets and its main characters.

As a special treat, Watch Dogs also features a multiplayer mode through which other characters can infiltrate the world of another player and attempt to hack his phone. The whole mode promises to deliver an intense experience that further adds to the world of Watch Dogs.

Why it matters:

Ubisoft has been a big militant for innovation in the gaming industry, and with Watch Dogs it's finally putting its money where its mouth is.

While the delay has certainly disappointed some fans, there are still many gamers who are eagerly awaiting the new experience.

Throw in the fact that it will appear across all consoles and the PC and Ubisoft has the seeds for a great new franchise that's anchored in today's society via the hacking and surveillance themes.

Watch Dogs launches this spring for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One.
