What we know:

The Thief series has delighted plenty of gamers many years ago through clever stealth mechanics and a great protagonist in the form of Garrett.

Now, Eidos Montreal wants to reboot the series with a whole new version of the Master Thief, as well as with sweeping changes to the stealth gameplay designed to reward both veterans and newcomers alike.

The new game features a darker version of Garrett as well as a more Goth edition of his native City, which is currently ruled by The Baron and infested by a plague.

As such, it's up to Garrett to save his home and bring his own kind of justice to the streets of the City, one that will see his pockets fill with all sorts of valuables.

In terms of gameplay, the new Thief title will once again focus on stealth mechanics, as Garrett can sneak around using all sorts of elements from the environment. As a new feature, there's a mechanic called Focus that slows down time and highlights items that will help the Master Thief in his quest.

Veterans and purists, however, can turn a lot of these helpful systems off and rely just on their skills to survive the City and its inhabitants.

Why it matters:

The stealth genre has seen a renaissance of sorts with the likes of Dishonored, Hitman: Absolution, or even Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Even so, the legacy of the Thief franchise in the genre continues to endure, so it's great to see that Garrett is finally making a comeback.

Eidos Montreal has already proved that it can deliver great titles with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, so it's time to see if it can also do the old franchise justice with the reboot.

Thief is out for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, and Xbox One on February 25 in North America, and February 28 in Europe.
