What we know: Platinum Games is planning to release the climactic sequel to 2009’s Bayonetta this year, to be published by Nintendo as a Wii U exclusive title.

Bayonetta 2 will once again center on its protagonist, a witch who uses both firearms and magical attacks to fight her mystical enemies.

Bayonetta’s key points were the easy to pick up but deep combat system, its fast-paced battles, the Witch Time mechanic that allows players to slow down time, the wild action sequences and the general character and level design.

The sequel, titled Bayonetta 2, was confirmed by Platinum Games for this year, to launch exclusively on the Wii U at a yet undisclosed date, and judging from the trailer released at E3 2013, it will bring even more over-the-top action than its sequel.

Why it matters:

Bayonetta was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and although it was met with critical acclaim, its sales were lower than expected.

As such, Nintendo partnered up with Sega, the franchise owners, in order to have the sequel developed exclusively for the Wii U.

As the Wii U is struggling with its fierce competition, a solid title such as Bayonetta 2 could help it gain some traction, especially since the developers have also announced multiplayer support.

One of the main draws of Bayonetta was the crazy fantasy action set in a modern background. The character’s flashy and unique fighting style was also one of the main features of the game, and now its fans are eagerly waiting to see what the developers came up with this time around.

Fighting on top of a flying jet, on top of a speeding train and on top of skyscrapers seems to be the norm for the highly anticipated hack and slash game Bayonetta 2.
