What we know:

The Last Guardian is one of the most anticipated PlayStation 3 exclusives titles in quite some time, as Sony confirmed it back in 2009 and has since promised that the game, coming from its Team Ico, will deliver the same type of ground-breaking and emotional experience like Ico or Shadow of the Colossus.

Sadly, while the company has revealed some images and videos since then, it constantly delayed the game and, last year, we heard that the leader of Team Ico, Fumito Ueda, is no longer a full-time employee and will just consult on the upcoming title.

No new details have appeared since then, but we still know quite a lot about The Last Guardian, which focuses on a small boy who's trying to escape the ruins of a large castle while gaining the trust of a griffin-like creature called Trico.

While the player will interact and even get to ride Trico during the story, they'll also do a lot of exploration and try to defeat different shadow guardians in all sorts of ways.

Other gameplay details are scarce, but you can already tell that The Last Guardian is borrowing quite a lot from Ico or even Shadow of the Colossus.

Why it matters:

Both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus provided great experiences that introduced new gameplay mechanics while adding clever twists on already established ones. Their stories were very emotional and the interaction between the young boy and Trico has already impressed fans.

Sony has always tried to back up out-of-the-ordinary games in recent years, ranging from indie projects like Journey or The Unfinished Swan, so you can bet that, one way or the other, it's going to release this game.

The Last Guardian is expected to appear sometime this year exclusively for the PlayStation 3 platform.
