Another ambitious MMO that needs to find out how to integrate a free-to-play model

What we know: The Elder Scrolls Online is an MMO developed by the newly created ZeniMax Online studio and published by Bethesda, probably the last big attempt to make a persistent online game exclusively for the PC.

The game is supposed to be free-to-play, with players able to enjoy all the content for free with a minority supporting the experience by purchasing cosmetic enhancements and some gameplay aids.

ZeniMax Online wants to create an MMO that focuses on player choice and freedom, with a minimalist user interface and quests that have clear impact on the universe of the game.

The MMO is set about 1,000 years before the events of the single-player Elder Scrolls series, which gives the developers a chance to drop a lot of lore on the players and immerse them in events that will shape the world they have come to know and love.

ZeniMax Online also wants The Elder Scrolls Online to offer the largest battles ever seen in the genre, with players able to work together to bring down and occupy big fortresses as three factions battle for supremacy.

Gamers will also have a wide variety of choices when it comes to race, class and abilities.

The Elder Scrolls Online is set to launch exclusively on the PC and will probably arrive during the fall.

Why it matters: The Elder Scrolls Online is one of the most ambitious MMO projects of the last few years and it might be the last such title to appear exclusively on the PC.

The game will benefit from the extended universe that Bethesda has already created, but it remains to be seen whether players are interested in such massive battles and if the MMO can expand on the old mechanics of the genre.
