What we know: Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns is the final part of the saga within a franchise that Square Enix has created around the Fabula Nova Crystallis universe, designed to wrap up all the narrative threads of the previous two releases and offer a clear ending for the main character.

The video game will mark a shift from the traditional structure of the series, with the development team saying that the combat elements of the game will be more action-oriented and that exploration of the world will be more important to the evolution of the story.

Lightning will have to work against the clock in order to prevent the Novus Partus, a series of islands floating in the Sea of Chaos, from being destroyed.

She will be the only playable character and gamers will be able to use the impressive customization elements built into the game to change her appearance and adapt her abilities to the challenges of the story.

The main theme of the Square Enix game will be time and the developers want gamers to replay it in order to get all the options and meet all characters.

Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns will be launched on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 in 2013.

Why it matters: Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns will cap three video games linked to the Fabula Nova Crystallis universe that have failed to deliver the level of success associated with the series, despite high expectations and solid levels of quality.

The game will also give hints about what Square Enix plans to do with Final Fantasy next.

Some players are asking for the other games in Fabula Nova Crystallis to be launched, while others are asking the company to move directly to Final Fantasy XV.
