What we know:

Dead Space 3 continues the saga of space engineer turned traumatized hero Isaac Clarke, who now reaches the icy planet of Tau Volantis. As always, he is not alone, as besides the regular survivors and the deadly necromorphs, he meets up with Sergeant John Carver, a former military man who battles with dementia but is more than eager to help Isaac on his journey.

While still featuring a story that will take Isaac through all sorts of new situations, the game also supports going through its plot cooperatively, as another player can control Carver and experience not just new areas but also a modified story.

While this is certainly the biggest new feature of the game, developer Visceral has implemented others, including a crafting mechanic that lets players customize their favorite weapons and upgrade them.

New enemies are also present, as the deadly Necromorphs have evolved into new variations on the icy planet.

Throw in special platform-specific features, like the support for the Kinect sensor on the Xbox 360, and Dead Space 3 is shaping up to be a pretty interesting survival horror experience.

Why it matters:

Survival horror games haven't exactly made a comeback, despite the fact that Capcom attempted such a thing with Resident Evil 6 last year, only to be assaulted with negative reactions from fans.

As such, it's up to Dead Space 3 to show that atmospheric horror shooters can still succeed in such a tough market.

It's also going to be interesting to see just how many people opt to play cooperatively, as the competitive multiplayer from Dead Space 2 proved to be a failure.

Dead Space 3 is out on February 5, in North America, and February 8, in Europe, for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
