Activision's Call of Duty franchise will witness the release of a new installment this fall and it's quite likely that the publisher will launch Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
Like with 2011's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the new title might be developed by Infinity Ward in collaboration with Sledgehammer Games, with help from other internal Activision studios, like Raven Software or even Neversoft, which recently revealed that it's going to contribute to the hugely successful first-person shooter franchise.
While we already know, thanks to a few leaks, that Activision is strategizing where to take the Call of Duty series on next-generation platforms, it's quite likely that the next game in the franchise will still appear for current devices, including the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, as well as on the PC and, like with last year's Black Ops 2, on the Wii U.
Modern Warfare 3 did bring a pretty good conclusion to the plot of the spinoff series, but there's always room for a sequel that could segue into a new team of heroes led by already-established characters.
Why it matters:
Even if Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 didn't overtake its predecessors in terms of sales, it still made a lot of profit for publisher Activision and is currently entertaining tens of millions of players worldwide across the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U.
As such, you can expect Activision to continue investing in the series in order to attract longtime fans and pique the interest of gamers who've yet to come into contact with the first-person shooter.
The next Call of Duty game is expected to appear in early November for platforms like the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, or Wii U.
