What we know: BioShock Infinite is the next game from Ken Levine and his Irrational Games team, a title that aims to capture the essence of the first title in the series while introducing a new set of concepts and tackling notions like racism and religion.

The action moves to the floating island of Columbia, which was designed as a showcase of American power at the end of the XIX century but is now being torn apart by two big factions who are fighting for control.

The player will become Booker DeWitt, a former Pinkerton detective, who is sent to Columbia in order to find and rescue a girl called Elizabeth, who is displaying impressive supernatural powers.

Gamers will need to explore the world that Irrational Games has created and deal with the various characters while also keeping Elizabeth as safe as possible.

The combat will be an evolution of that seen in the original BioShock, with a mix of powers and innovative weaponry and a series of enemies that are aware of their surroundings and work as a team to take the player out.

BioShock Infinite will be launched on March 26 worldwide and can be played on the PC, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony.

Why it matters: BioShock Infinite was one of the games that we were expecting to see launch last year but it picked up two big delays, gaining and then also losing a set of multiplayer modes.

Ken Levine is well known for his ability to create complex worlds and interesting characters and Columbia seems to be his most ambitious project yet.

It will also be interesting to see whether BioShock Infinite will be able to expand the scope of the first-person shooter genre.
