Incoming 2013: Baldur’s Gate 2 Enhanced Edition

A revival of the best party-based role-playing game of the '90s

What we know: Baldur’s Gate 2 Enhanced Edition is a known quantity even if the team at Overhaul Games working on it has been pretty tight-lipped about the exact details.

The Enhanced Edition for the first game in the series was a low key triumph because it managed to bring the original role-playing game behemoth to modern PCs with a minimal amount of bugs, most of which were fixed after launch, while adding some interesting new content.

The plan is probably the same for the second Baldur’s Gate title and we can only hope that the team at Overhaul Games is using the experience they have gained to push things a little further.

The player party versus monster Dark Pits mode could use an expansion, with more types of enemy waves ready for assault and more of a story to wrap it up together.

Fans of the series will also appreciate more expansive story arcs for the party members that are added and better overall voice work.

Baldur’s Gate 2 Enhanced Edition should be out initially on the PC, probably during late summer or early autumn, and the game will then move to tablets about one month later.

Why it matters: Baldur’s Gate 2 Enhanced Edition is important because of what it might lead to as long as it performs well when it launches.

Overhaul Games says that the remakes are just practice work for an eventual Baldur’s Gate 3, a true follow-up to what might be the best party-based role-playing game series in gaming’s history.

Baldur’s Gate 2 Enhanced Edition will likely not reach a very wide audience, but it’s good to know that the gems of the previous gaming era can be salvaged and launched for modern computers.
