Can the new shooter add some variety to the stale genre?

What it is:

Spec Ops: The Line is a new third person shooter coming from developer Yager and publisher 2K Games.

The new title wants to deliver a special story focused on a spec ops team whose members are stuck in a version of Dubai that’s been overrun by the desert sands.

They were initially sent to rescue an U.S. Army general from the Arabian city, but the soldiers must now try to survive by neutralizing opponents and withstanding the harsh environment.

In between fighting with enemies and taking shelter from the desert storms in the ruined buildings of Dubai, players will also have to deal with the violent realities of war, as Yager wants to really showcase what soldiers sometimes need to do in order to survive.

Unlike other third person shooters, Spec Ops: The Line places a heavy emphasis on tactics, as players can give out orders to members of their team while encountering enemy threats. The ever changing environment, however, also requires quick thinking, so players must account for all possibilities when engaging their opponents.

The single-player campaign will be joined by a multiplayer mode that, sadly, hasn’t gotten a lot of details up until now. Those interested in its online action will be happy to hear that special bonuses will be made available to those who pre-order the title before its release later this year.

Why it matters:

While there may be lots of shooters flooding the games market nowadays, Spec Ops: The Line is trying to differentiate itself by offering quite a few new things, like the unique sand mechanic, while focusing on the gritty violence that’s present during a war.

Throw in the fact that it has a multiplayer mode and it might end up attracting quite a lot of shooter fans this summer, when it is released on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Spec Ops: The Line is out on June 26, in North America, and June 29, in Europe.
