It could be only a matter of time until these trees also sprout tables, nightstands

Just in case anyone needs further proof that environmental pollution can cause the weirdest of things to spring into being, here is a picture showing chairs growing on trees in North Carolina.

Researchers are now busy investigating the phenomenon, and say that it might be only a matter of time until these trees also sprout tables and nightstands.

Once this happens, odds are forest elves will also make an appearance in the region and claim the furniture as their own.

Joking aside, it must be said that the chairs pictured above did not end up in trees of their own accord.

On the contrary, they were put there by American artist Tom Shields as part of an exhibition dubbed 0 to 60: The Experience of Time through Contemporary Art.

The exhibition was held at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, and Tom Shilds' art project was called Forest of the Chairs.

According to Tree Hugger, the artist fitted a total of 32 chairs on trees in a small forest that is part of said museum.

The chairs were all recovered from landfill, and Tom Shields says that he decided to attach them to trees to return them to their original home.

He stresses that, before moving forward with his project, he consulted with a specialist and made sure that the chairs would not damage the trees in any way.

Interestingly enough, the artist has no intention to remove the chairs himself. On the contrary, he plans to let them rot and whither away on their own.
