Development studio Southern Stars is offering its SkySafari iOS app free of charge through November 15, in anticipation of Australia’s total solar eclipse.

SkySafari 3 shows users the sky from any place on Earth up to one hundred years in the past or future. The app comes in three versions. The one we’re here to talk about shows you 120,000 stars, plus 220 of the best-known star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies.

You can use it to take a closer look at our Solar System's major planets and moons (featuring spacecraft imagery from NASA), as well as to learn a thing or two about asteroids and comets.

The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and requires iOS 4.3 or later. SkySafari has also been optimized for the iPhone 5 to display full-screen.
