"The Water Horse" is a beautiful and thrilling story to be released this Christmas, which blends legend and fact in one funny, moving mix about having a trouble-making pet of magical origins. And while this may give you an idea about the possible origins of the Loch Ness monster (heads up, all you unexplained mystery fanatics out there), it will also warm your hearts, give you some good laughs and make you want to watch it again and again.

When Walden Media, Beacon Pictures and Revolution Studios teamed up to bring Richard King-Smith's best-selling novel "The Water Horse" on the big screen, they knew they were taking on a difficult yet exciting task. King-Smith himself expressed his enthusiasm at the idea: "I am delighted at the news that my story 'The Water Horse' is to be made into a film" he stated. "It is something that I have long hoped would happen and I'm most excited that this particular book of mine is to be adapted into a visual medium".

The movie's director, Jay Russell also commented: "'The Water Horse' has a classic quality that I believe movie-going audiences are craving. The pedigree of this material is exceptional, and it is a project I have been pursuing relentlessly for over five years. It has all of the elements I am looking for as a filmmaker and I truly believe this is the film I was born to make."

"This is a timeless story whose message is as relevant today as it was when the book was written more than 20 years ago. It is a story of legendary proportions, and we have great people on board to make it a truly magical event", said Joe Roth, the founder of revolution Studios. "The Water Horse" is the story of a young lonely Scottish boy who discovers a mysterious egg on the shore of a loch. The egg hatches and a mysterious creature - the mythical water horse, the sea monster of the Scottish legend - emerges. As the monster grows and grows...and grows, the boy has his hands full trying to hide the monster from people who don't understand it and want to hurt it.

The film walks in the footsteps of the epic "Lord of the Rings" in the sense that the same team who worked on Peter Jackson's epic will be in charge of the special effects and that filming is scheduled to take place in Scotland but mainly in the magnificent scenery of New Zealand. You can check out the trailer below - and make sure you see this movie, as it's got all the ingredients for a good fantasy: it's funny, challenging and optimistic - just what we all need before Christmas.
