AirPort made its entry into the computer world 7 years ago, on the 21st of July, at the Macworld Expo held in New York City,
and the initial offering included an optional expansion card for the new line of iBook notebooks, plus an AirPort Base Station. The original AirPort system was capable of transfer rates up to 11 Mbit/s, being commonly used for sharing Internet access and files between multiple computers.

After less than 4 years, on the 7th of January, 2003, the AirPort Extreme, based on the 802.11g specification was introduced by Apple. With this new version, the theoretical peak data transfer rate climbed up to 54 Mbit/s, while the new devices managed to be fully backward-compatible with existing 802.11b wireless network cards and base stations, despite the fact that the AirPort and AirPort Extreme cards are not physically compatible, since the AirPort Extreme cards can't be installed in older Macs, and the old AirPort cards, discontinued in 2004, can't be used inside the newer Apple computers.

On the first day of this year's Macworld Expo, Apple revealed to the public a new AirPort Extreme base station, now featuring a design similar to that of the Mac mini and Apple TV and able to comply with the 802.11n specifications. Today, we didn't get a new piece of hardware, but a software update for AirPort Extreme, and it's my pleasure to announce the second major software update coming from Apple this month, after the first security update that fixed the QuickTime issue found on the first day of the year by LMH and Kevin Finisterre.

The AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001 has 6.5MB in size and is recommended for all Intel-based Macs, providing "compatibility with AirPort Extreme base stations and networks", according to Apple's official statement.
