ThreatMetrix has released an infographic on the impact of cybercrime on e-commerce sales.

According to recent studies, as much as $3 billion (€2.3 billion) in e-commerce revenues is lost to cybercrime every year. The losses could increase in the future, especially since an all-time high of $1.2 trillion (€900 billion) in e-commerce sales is expected for this year.

To better understand these losses, ThreatMetrix has shown what we could buy with $3 billion (€2.3 billion) from the top five online retailers.

We could buy 5 million Kindles from Amazon, a yearly supply of Staples copy paper for 7.5 million office workers, 3 million iPhone 5s from Apple, 600 million colored pencils from Walmart, and 2 million QVC gemstone rings.

To prevent these losses, e-commerce websites are advised to implement cybercrime prevention measures, screen transactions for suspicious activity, and reject or add additional screening to suspicious transactions.
