Well, it seems like this autumn brings a lot of good news as far as the sound technology is concerned. The new in-wall loudspeakers from RBH are the stars of this new piece of news that will doubtlessly raise interest among those audio enthusiasts that are fond of high-end, high-tech in-wall sound: the RBH- SI-250 is an all-in one in-wall loudspeaker that comes with a most nifty 3-way architecture and most importantly, is highly capable of delivering a most serious acoustic field that was never before experienced with such
enclosures.
The Linear Array Transducer technology is a new method to produce bass with a high sound pressure level (SPL) from small-sized mechanisms; it's common knowledge that the in-wall placement of loudspeakers has one major inconvenient in the body of the space restrictions associated with wall thickness and home décor, as well as wiring capabilities.
This way, traditionally, in-wall and in-ceiling loudspeakers were looked at as lesser-quality ones, at least as far as the bass performance was concerned.
It is also commonly known that the SPL varies according to the mobile pieces' surface... hence the in-wall impairment. Well, things are completely different now, thanks to the LAT technology: the subwoofer unit sports an enclosure shaped like a semi-open tube loaded with a lot of bass drivers with small diameter, each half of them facing a direction opposite to the others'.
As well, each half of the diaphragms is powered by a magnet placed at the end of the tube. While all diaphragms are correctly aligned, this causes a lot of air to be moved synchronously and thus allowing the altogether very small drivers to reach SPL as high as 100dB or more. The SI-250 also sports a midrange driver and a radiator tweeter, but they have traditional technology.
This solution is so far the most comprehensive for obtaining serious bass from minimal-sized drivers that can not only be mounted inside the walls but at the same time can be used in other applications requiring great sound from diminutive transducers, such as TVs or mini systems. One thing is sure, the LAT technology means a really cool step forward. Finally, there is no news on pricing; the RBH- SI-250 is due in early 2008.
