Consumers and most other end-users can make do with regular and mildly encrypted storage solutions as long as they are careful enough. For applications where security is a prime concern, however, such as large organizations and government agencies, there is always the need for a more advanced storage means. Imation seeks to offer this solution in the form of external hard drives that can protect stored content both from hacks as well as physical tampering.

The two external hard disks that the company has developed are known as the H100 and H200 and are the newest additions to the Defender line. Designed to operate on the USB 2.0 interface, the drives have on-board AES 256-bit hardware encryption, which will make sure to safeguard the 250GB, 320GB or 500GB of stored data.

Additionally, the H100 comes with password authentication, whereas the H200 also supports biometric fingerprints. Furthermore, both units have tamper-resistant, metal enclosures that also bring the benefits of water and dust resistance.

“The need for data security continues to increase among corporations and consumers,” Liz Conner, senior research analyst, IDC, said. “By teaming with various security technology partners and integrating security features into its broad portfolio of data storage products, Imation has created a strong platform that will help organizations and individuals defend against data breaches.”

“The need for data-at-rest security solutions is rapidly growing, with data breaches costing U.S. organizations at least $45 billion annually,” Keith Schwartz, director of strategic growth and public sector for Imation's global commercial business, stated. “With decades of leadership in data storage, Imation is in a unique position to help solve the security problems created by the significant expansion of electronic information.”

The Defender H100 and H200 are accompanied by a five-year warranty. The company has also unveiled a number of flash drives, with or without biometric authentication, as well as a special optical drive and the Defender Software Suite. All products are FIPS validated and compliant with the Trade Agreements Act (TAA).
