While it is inherently superior to FDM (filament-based printing), even SLA 3D printing technology has varying degrees of quality.

The new Ilios Ray 3D Printer from Cyprus-based Ilios 3D is one of the most impressive ones I've covered so far.

Not just because of its build quality but also the sheer size. At 892 x 512 x 200 mm / 35.11 x 20.15 x 7.87 inches, it's one of the largest consumer models out there.

The size isn't there just for show, however. It hides one of the most accurate SLA mechanisms yet, allowing objects to be printed with a resolution of 22 microns and a layer thickness of only 6 microns.

After seeing SLA printers with layer thickness of 40 microns, that's pretty remarkable, although you can be sure that a print job will take quite some time on max detail settings.

The build envelope is of 297 x 211 x 300 mm, by the way, or 11.69 x 8.30 x 11.81 inches.

The Ilios Ray 3D Printer has a price of €14,495 / $18,722, so most of you probably won't buy it, even though it does show up next to a Christmas tree in the promo shots. There's no denying the quality though, especially since the printer does pretty much everything automatically, even the post-curing and removal of the fabricated project once completed.
