Talks body image, coming up in an industry without women

Iggy Azalea has come under heavy fire in the past few weeks, which may or may not have resulted in her refusing to do media appearances to promote her first international tour, which was eventually pushed back for later this year.

She’s also quit social media and has vowed to keep a very low profile from now on, drawing a line between her private life and her public persona. Still, she’s showing signs of coming around, doing her first major interview in a very long time, with Vogue magazine.

Iggy gets candid about body image

Not only did the rapper sit down with the fashion magazine to talk about herself but she also agreed to do their famous 73 Questions segment, with the resulting video available for your viewing pleasure below. Moreover, she made this startling revelation: about 4 months ago, she had breast augmentation surgery.

The Australian rapper says she initially thought about keeping it a secret, since chances are few would have noticed. She is definitely underestimating the tabloids, but that’s a different discussion.

She went up a few cups because, she explains, “it’s all about proportion” and she’d grown tired of wearing padding or underwires on stage. She wanted to do something for herself, to feel more confident in her figure, and she’s been thinking of implants her “entire life.”

Iggy is very aware of the buzz around her figure, particularly her famous backside, but she insists she’s not even half as confident in real life as she comes across on stage. Plus, having a body like hers does imply certain obstacles when out shopping.

“I have to have everything tailored because I have such a small waist,” she says. “I’m a 2 or a 0 on the top, and a 6 on the bottom.”

“Doing something seemingly impossible in a field without women”

Iggy Azalea has been getting such a negative rap in recent months because she’s a middle-class, white woman from Australia appropriating black hip hop culture. She is a product of the industry machine, much like Britney Spears and many others like her are in pop music, but she still tries to sell an image of a genuine, “legit” rapper.

Iggy will never be “legit” in the sense she wants to be, because she’s divorcing the rap music she’s performing from all political and cultural impact. Still, she insists that people hate her because she’s white and she’s a woman, and she continues to talk as if she’s the first female MC to become worldwide famous.

In the Vogue interview, she says she wanted to be a rapper since she was a kid (that was before she attempted to break on the scene as a pop star, we might as well add), because she loved the idea of “doing something seemingly impossible in a field without women.”

Iggy needs to win over the public with good interviews if she wants her upcoming arena tour to be a hit, and clearly confessions on plastic surgery will not do. However, not acting as if she’s the first female rapper ever would help.
