Apple has released new documentation for Windows customers employing iTunes for burning discs. In case you’re having problems, there are several steps you can take to alleviate your issues.

The tips dished out by Apple apply to the following “affected” products: iTunes 7 for Windows, iTunes 8 for Windows, Microsoft Windows XP SP2, Vista, and 7.

So if you’re anywhere in that ballpark and iTunes isn’t burning discs for you like it’s supposed to, listen up.

Apple says that iTunes makes it easy to burn audio, data, and MP3 CDs with most major disc drives on Windows, including CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW.

If something goes wrong, you might want to download and install the latest version of iTunes. That’s iTunes 11, but be warned that many people don’t like the user interface and some other uninspired changes. And downgrading is a major pain in the neck.

If you’re still having problems, Apple would like to entice you into reading through “Can't burn a CD in iTunes for Windows” for basic troubleshooting steps.

Then, “If you continue to have difficulty,” try these alternatives:

- Try other software - Use good blank discs - Check for software updates - Check for firmware updates - Check hardware configuration - Check drive audio cable - Remove iPod and test

Behind the first tip, Apple says, “Open a different music player, such as Windows Media Player, and test if it can play a CD you've burned.”

“Open the CD burning software that came with your computer or disc drive, and test to see if it can burn a CD.”

In its original support document, each of these steps has sub-steps (instructions) which you can follow. So if you’re still having problems you can check out the troubleshooting tips in detail at Apple’s site.

That is, if you haven’t set your computer on fire and went out and bought a Mac by now.
