Remote Analysis Ltd., a telemedicine services provider that also specializes in remote medical analysis, has introduced an iPhone application for recording and analyzing snoring and sleep apnea. Launched in cooperation with Elias Pietilä’s Qvik Ltd. (the maker of the popular Wooden Labyrinth - iTunes link), the Sleep Aid application is immediately available on the iTunes App Store for three dollars.

“This application is very easy to use,” CEO Ossi Tiihonen says. He explains, “Just place the iPhone on your night stand, click Record and go to sleep. In the morning click Wake up. After this you can browse a graph based on the night time recording and listen to audio clips revealing your snoring.”

Tiihonen also reveals that Sleep Aid includes samples of typical snoring and sleep-apnea events. This means that users can compare their own recording with the provided samples to determine whether there are symptoms or signs of sleep apnea. However, since only a doctor can make the diagnosis, it is best to consult a physician when you think you may suffer from a medical condition, Remote Analysis Ltd. advises.

”We have developed the application with Qvik Ltd and medical doctors who specialize in sleep apnea diagnostics. The application can be used to screen sleep apnea or, for example, to gather evidence of your husband’s snoring,” CEO Ossi Tiihonen continues.

“As a long-time iPhone user I was enthusiastic to be the medical advisor for the team to develop this application,” Miikka Peltomaa, MD, PhD, Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, ENT Center Aino, Jarvenpaa, Finland, adds. “Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder and our aim was to create a tool that enables anyone [to] easily detect the need for a further sleep study. Sleep Aid does not substitute a diagnosis made by your doctor but may give an alarm that one should see a doctor to find out how to sleep better. Remember that snoring may compromise the quality of your sleep. Consult your ENT-specialist to get treatment for your snoring.”
