Moving users off Windows XP is Microsoft’s big challenge these days and the company hopes that the launch of 8.1 will actually convince more people to abandon the ancient OS.

But Eric Schissel, CEO of Los Angeles-based GeekTek IT Services, a company that provides OS migration support, told InformationWeek in a short statement that many users would actually stick to XP beyond the retirement date, as their current configurations worked just fine.

“The business owners generally have the 'if it ain't broke' attitude, and despite our urging, they don't see the value in spending extra money to replace machines that still work,” he explained.

“It's a waiting game at this point, and we get diminishing returns from pushing our clients.”

Windows XP is currently installed on approximately 37 percent of computers worldwide, despite Microsoft’s efforts to move them to Windows 7 or Windows 8.
