A new young-adult best-selling novel is making the transition to the big screen but, this time, it’s not about vampires or other creatures of the night, and definitely not about a dystopian society in which the fate of many depends on the bravery of a few. This is a pure tearjerker.

The first trailer for it, included below, can confirm that. Based on a novel by Gayle Forman, “If I Stay” tells the story of a very talented and nice girl who’s dating a rebel-type / bad boy rocker. Until a terrible accident, she imagines that having to choose between her education and career, and the boy is the toughest decision she’ll ever have to make.

Chloe Grace Moretz plays the girl, Mia, and I’ve seen enough of her work to know that she has the skills to bring the best to this role. Chloe knows how to play the tough but vulnerable girl and, even if this movie turns out to be a major cheesefest, her performance will probably redeem it, at least partially. Jamie Blackley is her boyfriend, Adam.

The choice Mia will ultimately have to make is between life and death, after she’s put into a coma after a car crash that kills her parents: choose life with Adam and the reality of being an orphan of both parents, or choose death.

“If I Stay” will be out in theaters on August 22. Now for the trailer:
