14 DAY TRIAL // BBC has been up to some amazing things, and of the shows it made these past few years, one that also got the attention of fans from all over the world is “Luther,” with Idris Elba playing the lead, that of troubled but brilliant detective John Luther.
The other one is, obviously, “Sherlock,” with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
“Luther” ran for 3 seasons, and though Elba has been talking to the press saying he’s desperate for a fourth one, or at least a one-off episode, nothing has been set in motion in that sense yet.
The good news might come from the US, because Fox just ordered a “Luther” remake from series creator Neil Cross, Variety reports. Cross will also be writing the script for the pilot, which is now underway.
As of now, Elba hasn’t been approached to star in it, but he’s on board as an executive producer, with Katherine Pope, Peter Chenin, Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter.
Chances of him starring in the US remake are slim to none, if what happened to other British series ported to the US is any indication. If you recall, “Sherlock” is one of those, but the US remake is an entirely different show from the one that inspired it: basically, the biggest thing they have in common is that they’re modern versions of the classic character.
No word yet on how the US “Luther” will differ from the original, if at all. However, if it brings nothing new to the table, what would be the point in making it, when fans could just re-watch the episodes from the British production over and over.
