A 53-year-old man has brought home the prize at the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race this year. That makes Mitch Seavey the oldest winner recorded in the 41-year history of the game.

According to Anchorage Daily News, he won the race by 23 minutes and 39 seconds, snatching a win from last year's runner-up, Aliy Zirkle.

In 2012, she lost the trophy to Seavey's 25-year-old son Dallas, the youngest winner of the Iditarod challenge. The younger Seavey won last year's competition by 59 minutes and 44 seconds.

This year, the race veteran celebrated his 20th race and 19th finish, one of which ended in another win in 2004.

“I hate to go off into the sunset knowing I only did it once in 20 tries, so it’s sorta a validation,” he describes.
