Before the big game between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks at the Super Bowl XLIX, and before Katy Perry’s visually stunning Halftime performance, Idina Menzel kicked off the year’s biggest televised sporting event with a flawless rendition of the National Anthem.

You can see her performing “The Star Spangled Banner” in the video below. The second video is of John Legend’s equally beautiful take on “America the Beautiful” that actually preceded Idina’s number.

Idina, now a mainstream name because of her contribution to Disney’s “Frozen” soundtrack, is a famous Broadway singer – and she brought all that experience and her amazing talent to the Super Bowl, making the bold choice of singing acapella.

The last time the National Anthem was sung this way at a major game was 5 years ago, when country singer Carrie Underwood brought tears to the eyes of all Americans with her impeccable rendition.

This performance will serve Idina to wash away some of the criticism she received one month ago, when video of her performance of “Let It Go” (from “Frozen”) at the Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest went viral because of her inability to hit the right notes.

That performance was billed by many a “disaster,” even though she defended it by saying that a good number means more than hitting notes: it’s about connecting with the audience and delivering a message, which she believed she did.

There will be no criticizing this performance though. Check it out.
