A cool new app is making a name for itself on the iTunes App Store thanks to its capability of putting shortcuts on your home screen, so you don’t have to navigate all the way to their location to use the awesome features of the iPhone / iPod touch / iPad.

Icon Project (Home Screen Icon) by Jeong JH (FMProject) lets you create unlimited types of icons on your Home screen for various functions like calling up a favorite person in your address book (e.g. your girlfriend / boyfriend), send an SMS/MMS, email someone, or make a multi-function icon that allows you to choose whether to make a call or send a text every time you touch it.

For iPhone enthusiasts, probably the best thing about Icon Project is its ability to create shortcuts for Setting preferences, like screen brightness, toggling WiFi on and off, sounds, and all sorts of other gimmicks.

Previously you could only do that with a Cydia app called SBSettings that required a jailbroken device.

You can also send an icon to friends and the icon will be created on their home screen the instant they tap on the link inside the email. Other cool features advertised by Jeong JH include:

■ Creating icon from your addressbook. ■ Creating icon with photos in your album. ■ Using built-in icons, photo frames and badges. ■ Selecting background colors or drawing (multi-line) text on icons. (You can select font type, text color, text size and even text alignment.) ■ Creating icon with link types such as call, SMS/MMS, mail, facetime, Skype or any types of URL that you want to use. ■ Loading recently created icon files.

The 7.5MB app is localized in English, Japanese, and Korean and requires an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 3.1.3 or later (which means even the oldest iPhone and iPod touch are supported).
