Lots of things work, but also several need to be fixed

Who thought that the first smartphone to be delivered with Google’s Android mobile platform, the HTC G1, would be able to run the latest Ice Cream Sandwich operating system?

Apparently hardware requirements for Android 4.0 are that low, as G1 is now unofficially running ICS.

Obviously, this was only possible courtesy to the folks over at XDA who made it happen. The first AOSP (Android Open Source Project) port of Ice Cream Sandwich to the HTC G1 is now available for download.

Android enthusiasts who still own this old device, and wish to flash the first Alpha release of ICS should be aware of the fact that this is a work in progress and lots of features and apps are not working, such as the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity options, or the rotation.

However, it appears that the SMS and calls work, along with the integrated browser, which loads up pretty fast. Check out XDA forum thread for more updates on the matter.
