The update is still in the works, but Huawei may be close to releasing it

Chinese handset manufacturer Huawei is among the first companies to release an official Ice Cream Sandwich ROM for one of its Gingerbread smartphones. Huawei Honor had the “honor” of getting a demo version of Ice Cream Sandwich about two weeks ago.

Those who wanted to flash the ROM were also given the option to roll back to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, as the beta version was a bit unstable and lots of features were not working.

More recently, the folks over at Pad.Cnmo found out that Huawei is also working on an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM for its MediaPad tablet, which is currently stuck on Android 3.2 Honeycomb.

According to them, the tablet should be able to support voice calls and messaging functions after the update. Although there is no official information for the moment, Huawei is close to issue a statement regarding the future Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for some of its Android devices, including the MediaPad.

Huawei hopes to be among the first handset makers to deliver the Android 4.0 upgrade to its devices, so its tablet may be more competitive, especially given its high price in the Chinese market.

Currently, Huawei MediaPad is priced at 2,999 yuan (475 USD or 360 EUR) outright in China, but the company may drop the slate’s price if/when other handset makers announce Ice Cream Sandwich devices early next year.

Mostly known for its cheap devices, Huawei plans to launch a new family of top tier Android devices next year. The MediaPad is the latest tablet released by the Chinese company and features a 7-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen that support 800 x 1280 pixels resolution.

The tablet is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual core Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon processor, which is complemented by an Adreno 220 graphics processing unit.

There’s also 5.8 GB of storage, 8GB of ROM, 1GB of RAM and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB). Stay tuned for more updates on the subject.
