Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest flavor of Google’s Android operating system, is slowly capturing more ground on the company’s platform distribution charts.

The latest data from the company, collected during a 14-day period ending on June 1st, 2012, shows that the operating system version is now loaded on 7.1 percent of all active Android devices, a significant increase from the 4.9 percent it accounted for last month.

Google is monitoring all handsets, tablets and other devices that access its official application portal, the Google Play Store, so as to determine which of its platform versions are more used.

The latest numbers coming from this show that Android 4.0 - Android 4.0.2, the first two flavors of Ice Cream Sandwich, are loaded on 0.4 percent of active devices out there.

The next two platform releases, Android 4.0.3 - Android 4.0.4, are currently powering 6.7 percent of all active devices, up from 4.4 percent a month ago.

Oddly enough, although Ice Cream Sandwich is the newest OS iteration, the older Gingerbread platform release is gaining ground as well.

The platform is loaded on 65 percent active devices now, up from 64.4 percent a month ago. The Android 2.3 - Android 2.3.2 flavors of the OS power 0.4 percent handsets and tablets, while Android 2.3.3 - Android 2.3.7 platform versions are loaded on 64.6 of them.

Google’s older Android variants are losing ground faster than before. 2.2 Froyo, for example, powers only 19.1 percent active Androids, down from 20.9 percent last month.

Android 2.1 Éclair is present on 5.2 percent of devices, down from 5.5 percent in May, Android 1.6 Donut powers 0.6 percent of them (0.7 percent last month), while Android 1.5 Cupcake is loaded on 0.3 percent devices, the same as a month ago.

Moving forth, we should expect for even more Ice Cream Sandwich devices to be accessing the Google Play store, especially with new, high-end handsets such as Samsung’s Galaxy S III arriving on shelves as we speak.
