Arsene Wenger has been with Arsenal for the last 10 years. Today, the Frenchman celebrates a decade among the gunners, and all Arsenal supporters are thrilled. One of them is former club legend Ian Wright, the man who marked Arsenal’s existence through the ‘90s. As he praised Arsene’s contribution to the
club’s history, he also warned the gunners not to let him go in the near future.
"
Whenever a big job comes up, Arsene’s name is always the first on the list. I get a little bit frightened because he has achieved a lot at Arsenal and you wonder how long he will stay. It would have been interesting if Arsenal had won the Champions League last year because he could have thought ‘what next?’ and maybe moved on to pastures new", admitted Wright to "The Sun".
More, Arsenal’s former legend made an astonishing statement concerning last season’s loss in the Champions League final: "
I’m quite glad they didn’t win the Champions League because I don’t think it’s time for him to leave yet. Once he says he wants to leave I don’t think he’s the type of person whose mind can be changed".
The statement comes only a few days after the Frenchman admitted to the same tabloid that: "
no matter how many trophies I’ll will with Arsenal, the CL final against Barcelona will always haunt me". Still, for Ian, keeping Wenger on the Emirates Stadium is much more important that winning a European trophy.
"
It was important we didn’t win the Champions League. We could still do it in a few years’ time but, without Arsene Wenger, the club could be in trouble. It would be very hard for anyone to fill his shoes. To keep the top players happy, to recruit the best players in the world and know when it’s time to let the great players go. He is irreplaceable", concluded Wright.
Wenger replaced Bruce Rioch a decade ago, to lead Arsenal into some of the club’s best 10 years in history. Arsenal won 4 FA Cup trophies, 4 Community Shields, and 3 Premiership titles in the "Wenger era". During his mandate, the gunners also reached the UEFA Cup final (2000) and the Champions League final, both lost to Galatasaray and Barcelona respectively.
