74-year-old actor Sir Ian McKellen has retired as his character Gandalf, completing his time on the set of “The Hobbit” on Friday, June 28.

Canoe writes that McKellen has been an integral part of all the three “Lord of the Rings” movies and “The Hobbit” prequel, which have been adapted after J.R.R. Tolkien's works.

Director Peter Jackson has captured the photo attached to this article on their final day of shooting together in New Zealand.

He has posted it on Twitter with a heartfelt caption, mentioning that the pair have been working together for more than a decade.

“Seconds ago we finished our last shot with Gandalf. The end of an incredible adventure that began in 1999. I'm feeling very sad right now, ” Jackson writes.
